Historical Northern Thailand
7 days/6 nights
In this guided tour you will
travel the distance between Bangkok and Phitsanulok by air or
train and start from there by overland to the highlights of Sukhothai,
Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle area.

Day 1 Bangkok - Phitsanulok
First part of the tour is a short flight
(also by train possible, it's youir choice! 5 hrs by 2nd class
air-con) from Bangkok to Phitsanulok. Transfer to the hotel.
Then visit Wat Mahathat with its Buddha image, which is famous
all over the country. Then take a short walk and see the raft
villages on the Nan River. Rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2 Phitsanulok - Chiang Mai
In the morning travel to the province
of Sukhothai, Thailand's first capital. Visit the Historical
Park with its impressive monuments, temples and ruins dating
back to the 13th century. Go on to Lampang via Si Satchanalai
. Visit a Burmese temple and the nearby fruit
market. Opportunity for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage (optional).
They are unique and only in Lampang. Continue to Chiang Mai with
further short stops on the way. Arrive Chiang Mai early evening
and sepnd the night in the city center.

Day 3 Chiang Mai - Thaton
Tour goes on to the north and first
stop at an elephant camp. Watch the demonstration, how these
giants take a morning bath and are educated for their job in
the forest before starting for a ride on one of them, followed
by a trip down river on a bamboo raft. Continue to the small
town of Thaton and visit its main temple on a hill with giant
Buddha images and great views to the Kok River. Continue to a
remote Lahu hill tribe village in the mountain wilderness. Overnight
at a resort on the river banks.
Day 4 Thaton - Golden Triangle

Travel up to Doi Maesalong, a mountain
top village inhabited by chinese descendants. Go on along nice
mountain sceneries and passing through various hill tribe villages,
such as Lisu, Yao and Akha. Have a look to a countryside temple
which is mostly occupied by monkeys from the nearby mountain
jungle. Reach Mae Sai, northernmost- and border town to Myanmar
(Burma). Optional visit of the Burmese border town Tachilek is
possible (border pass available). Continue to the famous "Golden
Triangle" where the borders of Thailand, Laos and
Myanmar (Burma) meet. Visit the Opium Museum
and a further short drive to Chiang Saen, the former royal town
on the banks of the Mekong. Overnight.
Day 5 Golden Triangle - Chiang Mai

In the morning first enjoy a short boat
trip on the mighty Mekong, which includes a stop on a Laotian
river island of Don Sao. Then travel back to Chiang Mai via Chiang
Rai, Mae Suay and Mae Kachan. Have a some stops on the way, such
at a local countryside market and some hot springs. Arrive Chiang
Mai in the afternoon. Accommodation at a hotel in the city center.
Day 6 Chiang Mai
Sightseeing tour in Chiang Mai, the
northern capital, which includes a visit to two of it's most
famous temples, an orchid farm, a drive through the old part
of the town and finally a visit to various handicraft centers,
like silk weaving, silverware, sa paper umbrella production,
woodcarving etc. (just visit the ones in which you are interested).
Accommodation again in the center of Chiang Mai.

Day 7 Chiang Mai
Day at leisure until transfer to the
airport........or extend your stay.

Air (or train) ticket Bangkok-Phitsanulok,
air-conditioned transportation during the tour, English speaking
tour guide, all transfers and excursions as mentioned in the
above itinerary, accommodation in middle- and upper middle class
hotels/resorts, entrance fees, half board (daily breakfast and
